Classic Shell now makes Internet Explorer 9 look like IE8

classic shell make windows 7 look like xp
If you used Windows XP for a long time (who didn't?), one of the biggest changes when moving to Windows 7 or Vista was the massively-altered Explorer. While the new Explorer introduces some useful new features, it also removed just as many -- which is where Classic Shell comes in!

We've covered Classic Shell before, but here's the crib note: Classic Shell restores almost every Windows XP-era Explorer feature. The best change, in our opinion, is the reemergence of the 'up' arrow, meaning you now navigate without using the Windows Vista/7 'breadcrumbs' address bar. The status bar yet again shows the total size of your selection, and -- praise be! -- the diabolical Windows 7 Copy File 'copy and replace?' dialog has been replaced with a Windows XP lookalike (image after the break).

New to the most recent version of Classic Shell is the ability to make IE9 look like IE8. With Classic Shell the title bar yet again has a caption, so you can see the full title of Web pages. The current security zone and loading progress indicator have been put back into the status bar, too. If you enable 'Show tabs on a separate row,' it's almost like using IE8.

Finally, Classic Shell replaces the omnipotent Windows 7 Start Menu with the age-old 'classic' Windows 2000/XP-style Start Menu. Classic Shell makes the Start Menu skinable, too, if you're into the kind of thing.

As awesome as it sounds, we've only touched on a small section of Classic Shell's feature set. Check the Classic Shell site for a complete list. There's a few more images of Classic Shell in action after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Premier is official - 4.65-inch screen, Jelly Bean and TouchWiz

Android CentralAfter numerous rumors and leaks, the Samsung Galaxy Premier has finally been officially announced by Samsung Ukraine. Aimed at Eastern European markets, the Galaxy Premier combines mid-to-high-end smartphone internals with the latest software from Google and Samsung.

The Galaxy Premier packs a 4.65-inch, 1280x720 HD SuperAMOLED display, and is powered by a 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4 CPU, backed up by 1GB of RAM. You've also got 16GB of storage, expandable via a microSD slot, an 8MP rear camera and 1.9MP front-facer. On the software side, you're looking at Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean and Samsung's latest TouchWiz UI.

At one point the Galaxy Premier was rumored as a possible Samsung Nexus device, owing to its product number (GT-i9260) being similar to that of the Galaxy Nexus. Instead, it merely looks like Samsung's re-using some Galaxy Nexus components in its latest mid-range handset.

The Samsung Galaxy Premier is due for a November launch, priced at ?5,555 ($679). So far there's no information available as to any launch outside of Eastern Europe.

Acer delays Windows RT tablets as it gauges Surface acceptance

Acer delays Windows RT tablets as it gauges Surface acceptance

Acer is no stranger to airing its skepticism of Microsoft Surface, but the company is now adopting caution as the name of the game for its own Windows RT tablets. In an interview with Reuters, company president Jim Wong told the outlet that Acer would deliver its own RT-based tablet no earlier than Q2, as it's now monitoring how Microsoft's own hardware fares in the marketplace. According to Wong, Acer had previously targeted a Q1 debut. As it lets Microsoft serve as the canary in the coal mine, Acer will continue to focus on its full-fledged Windows 8 hardware, as well as develop and refine its own RT offering. "I don't know what's next, what Microsoft will do," Wong said. "We are watching how Surface is doing ... How is RT accepted by customers... We don't know... We want to see."

Libra for Android helps you track your weight using The Hacker's Diet system

libra
I'm getting fat; that's what you see on the screenshot to the right -- my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you've ever read The Hacker's Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you're gaining or losing weight.

When I use my "main" PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I've had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It's a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker's Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day's weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today's weight (as they're usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you're not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.

Microsoft Boxes Apple's Ears With Surface Tablet

You really don't get a sense of just how limited the iPad is until you actually explore the Surface tablet that Microsoft released last week. It is like the designers sat down over beers and argued over every single shortcoming they found in the iPad and then built into Surface just the right features to make the iPad look inadequate.

AT&T launches new 4G LTE network locations

AT&T LogoAT&T has announced that it is expanding its 4G LTE network to two new markets today. Folks with LTE devices -- phones, tablets, data sticks -- in Knoxville, Tennessee (and the counties surround the city) and Ft. Myers, Florida should now be able to access the new network. These two new markets bring AT&T's total up to 77 for the nation, covering a large portion of the population.

An interesting bit of information from the press release for the Knoxville rollout indicates that the company spent over $1.3 billion on improvements in its wireless and wireline (home broadband) infrastructure in the area from 2009 to 2011. That gives you a good idea of how much these networks cost to deploy.

We've got a look at both press releases for you after the break.

Apple iMessage sees second outage in a week, iTunes UK follows suit (update: back up, in theory)

Apple iMessage sees second outage in a week, iTunes UK follows suit

Apple may have a lot of iMessage users, but it has also had its share of teething troubles as the chat service (and iCloud) grows. That's certainly been true this month: Apple has confirmed that, for the second time in a week, iMessage is down for at least some users. There's a real chance those conversations won't go through unless it's between iPhone users that can try SMS. More pressing for anyone in the UK is a wider iTunes outage, as we've heard multiple reports of the app and media repository being inaccessible in the country no matter what device they use. We've reached out to Apple and will update if there's an explanation or a repair schedule for either outage. For now, we'd suggest that iMessage lovers communicate through social networks and passive-aggressive word choices in Letterpress.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: And no sooner than we post than Apple has iMessage back up and running. Let us know through tips if you're still having iMessage or iTunes UK trouble, however.

Cleveland Clinic and IBM team up to make Watson a Doctor (video)

Image

Medical research facility Cleveland Clinic and IBM are teaming up to develop ways to let supercomputer Watson become a useful tool for doctors. The machine's ability to analyze language and scour its database for answers is hoped to offer quicker and more exhaustive diagnoses for patients. As modern medical students spend less time memorizing diseases, they're focusing on learning how to think critically and navigate the huge amount of available data. Big Blue is also hoping that the Jeopardy champion will learn how to digest a person's medical records in order to match up their history with maladies. We're just nervous that someone will give Watson a telepresence robot and send him out onto the wards -- you'd be worried about his bedside manner if you've seen his ruthless quizzing manner.

ASUS: Nexus 7 selling 1 million units a month

Android Central

We've heard hints in the past that ASUS and Google's Nexus 7 tablet has been met with considerable commercial success. Today brings the strongest indication yet of the Nexus tablet's retail performance, as ASUS execs gave the Wall Street Journal a figure of 1 million units in a recent earnings call, according to the a report on the paper's website.

Speaking to the WSJ, ASUS Chief Financial Officer David Chang said, "At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K. This latest month, it was close to 1 million."

That figure puts the Nexus 7 a considerable distance behind Apple's iPad, but still makes it one of the most successful Android tablets ever. With the launch of 32GB and 3G/HSPA variants of the Nexus 7, in addition to the Samsung-made Nexus 10, Google will be hoping this success continues into the new year. However, both Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 will face considerable competition from the latest Apple, Amazon and Nook offerings, particularly in the U.S.
